Previously classified as a Eucalypt growing in the same forests as our Jarrah and Karri, the Marri tree (Redgum) is unique to Western Australia.

It was used by the aboriginals for a variety of health treatments and called various names including Mahree or Marri. The sap or Kino which oozes from the tree bark was used as an antiseptic. Dried and then powdered it was put into open wounds to prevent bleeding and added to water as a mouthwash, disinfectant and remedy for diarrhoea.

They used the blossoms dipped into water to produce a sweet drink called numbit and gathered the honey from beehives in the trees.
